Stay Informed About Evolving Scams
If you're selling a car, ATV, boat, or other items, be aware of common scams targeting online sellers.
Counterfeit Check/Overpayment Scams
With a counterfeit check scam, a fraudster will send a fraudulent check to pay for an item or service. Sometimes, the check will be over the agreed-upon amount. They will then ask you to refund the difference. When the check is later returned as counterfeit, the victim is responsible for the loss. It’s important to remember:
- Never send money to a third party based on a check you receive.
- Be cautious of unsolicited checks and letters.
- Verify payments before releasing merchandise or sending funds.
- Contact your bank if you receive a suspicious check or payment request.
Vehicle Decal/Wrap Scam
You may receive a check in the mail along with instructions to place advertising decals on your vehicle for well-known companies and national brands. The letter may instruct you to deposit the check and send a portion of the funds to an installer or third party. The check is likely fraudulent, and you could be responsible for any money sent. Funds may appear in your account, but it does not necessarily mean the check has cleared.
